Health authorities have confirmed that the latest strain of the coronavirus that causes the COVID-19 pandemic has spread in Thailand. The Thai Ministry of Health said in a statement on September 30 that 33 people have been infected with the new XFG strain, which causes COVID-19. Most of them are in the capital Bangkok. XFG has overtaken other strains of the virus that causes COVID-19 and is now the most infectious virus in the world. However, the symptoms caused by XFG are not more severe than those caused by other strains.

Thai health officials first detected the XFG infection in April. Between April 1 and September 24, 33 cases of XFG infection were confirmed, 23 of which were in Bangkok. The director of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Yunyot Sammabuddee, said most of the patients had fever, They showed only mild symptoms such as cough, sore throat, runny nose and headache, and none of them were in serious condition requiring hospitalization.

From April 1 to September 24, there were 608 laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases in Thailand, with the proportion of cases due to XFG being 5.4 percent. In other words, XFG has not yet dominated other coronavirus strains that cause COVID-19 in Thailand. Although the symptoms caused by XFG are not severe, Yun Yot urged people not to take it lightly and to follow basic rules such as washing hands regularly and avoiding crowds to protect themselves.

Although COVID-19 has degenerated from a global pandemic and is no longer as life-threatening as it once was, it remains a concern for the elderly and those with weakened immune systems. The Department of Disease Control earlier reported that as of July 14, Thailand had 589,342 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 239 deaths.
