The US Citizenship and Immigration Services, under the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), has officially announced a new policy that will re-examine permanent resident (Green Card) holders from 19 countries, including Myanmar. The policy will take effect on November 27, 2025.

According to the statement, the re-examination is a national security priority and aims to thoroughly examine whether citizens from countries designated as high-risk have obtained their Green Card in accordance with immigration laws. The list of countries to be re-examined includes countries in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, including Myanmar, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Nepal, Libya, Pakistan, Sudan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The background checks for Green Card applicants will now include country-specific negative factors from their country of origin. The policy guidance will go into effect on November 27 and will apply to all applications filed or currently pending on that date.

The review will not be a blanket revocation of all Green Card holders from the 19 countries, but will focus on those suspected of having obtained their Green Card illegally. DHS added that the new policy is a further tightening of the policy to protect the security of the United States.
