The Chin Revolutionary force called PDF Zoland arrested over 200 daily wage workers working in the opium fields in Tedim Township, northern Chin State, in early February, and will recruit those who meet the criteria. PDF Zoland’s political wing, the Zomi Federal Union (ZFU), said in a statement on February 8 that those aged between 18 and 35, who are in good health and free from family responsibilities, will be trained as soldiers.
They arrested over 200 workers from opium fields around Kennedy Mountain on February 5. Some, including pregnant women, were released, but more than 190 men are still being held. Locals say some of the released workers had injuries from beatings, but PDF Zoland denies this. The spokesman also confirmed that although workers have been arrested to eradicate opium cultivation, no opium fields have been destroyed so far.
Locals have criticized the arrest of opium workers and recruitment as an “unrealistic policy” at a time when armed groups are struggling to recruit new soldiers as the conflict continues. According to the 2025 report of the United Nations (UNODC), opium cultivation in Chin State has increased by 26 percent, and the war and economic hardship have led locals to turn to opium cultivation, which is more lucrative.
