The ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR) formally announced its continued engagement with the Steering Council for the Emergence of a Federal Democratic Union (SCEF) in a letter sent to the 10th session of the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw on June 1, and urged ASEAN and the international community not to recognize the Military Commission as the legitimate government.
APHR expressed deep concern over the military commission’s attempt to transform itself into a civilian government and gain international legitimacy after holding sham elections amid widespread violence and repression. The letter strongly emphasized that elections held under gunfire do not represent the will of the people and that a change of regime is not a mere change of uniform. “We urge ASEAN member states and the international community to reject these attempts and not to recognize the military-led government, as changing uniforms does not mean changing the system.”
ASEAN Parliamentarians for Human Rights (APHR), in support of bottom-up federalism, believes that the establishment of the SCEF is a meaningful step towards building an inclusive federal democracy. It also pledged to continue to stand strong with the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH), the National Unity Government (NUG), ethnic resistance organizations and civil society as the voice of the people.
At the same time, it expressed concern over the humanitarian crisis in Myanmar, with more than 22 million people in need of humanitarian assistance, and warned that these are not numbers, but lives. Therefore, the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) welcomes the fact that only the representatives elected in the 2020 general election continue to be recognized as truly legitimate representatives.
