A high school building in Singuanu Ward, Kalay town, Sagaing Region, burned to the ground on the evening of December 31, 2024, according to locals. The fire started at 7 p.m. on December 31, and residents of the neighborhood surrounded it and extinguished it. Fire trucks arrived around 8 a.m. to put out the fire.

“The wooden school building burned down. It has not been opened for a long time. There were military councils in the past. Now there are none. They say it was arson, but they don’t know for sure. When the fire trucks arrived, the military councils also came. They fired guns and other things, and the people who were fighting had to run away before the firefighters arrived.” a local resident said. The fire was extinguished at around 11:30 a.m., and the locals were able to prevent the fire from spreading to other school buildings and homes.

The high school was previously a Seventh-day Adventist church school, but it was confiscated by the military junta under U Ne Win. On December 29, a two-story school building in Zahaw village, Gangaw Township, Magway Region, was burned to the ground.
