The basic education schools of the Military Council nationwide for the 2025-2026 academic year opened today, June 2. There are 5,822,954 (over 5.8 million) students enrolled in basic education schools, monastic education schools and private schools in various regions and states including Nay Pyi Taw, including 1,035,105 (over 1 million) students in Yangon Region, according to the Military Council.

Currently, the Military Council has provided KG and primary school students with school uniforms, including textbooks, blank books, pencils, and pens. In addition, although basic education schools do not charge school fees, parents are facing difficulties due to the high cost of school supplies. A parent of a student living in Thingangyun Township said that private schools that follow the government curriculum have to buy all the school supplies, starting from textbooks, which is more expensive.

In addition, there is a fee to request the necessary documents to transfer from one township to another, and a parent of a student living in Latha Township said that they have to pay hundreds of thousands of baht to attend famous schools in Yangon. In addition, basic education schools in Hakha town, Tedim town and Khaikam town, Chin State, which are controlled by the Military Council, opened today, June 2, and many students are attending, according to locals.

This year, more students are attending high schools in Hakha, such as BEHS No(1), (2), (3), (4) and private high schools, than last year. “Almost all schools in Hakha have reopened and more students are attending. The number of students attending school this year is higher than in previous years because of children from the villages and children who fled the war in Hakha,” said a Hakha resident.

While basic schools in Hakha have been reopened, the rural schools have not been reopened, so students from the rural villages are attending school in the city. In addition, the BEHS No (1) Tedim and BEHS Khaikam schools in Tedim Township have also opened today and many students are attending, and security is being provided by the Military Council members.

Only one school can be opened in Tedim. BEHS No (2) schools are also open. Now, there are more students coming to Atka (1) school. The number of students will increase. The school in Khai Kam, a town adjacent to Kalay, has also opened this morning and children are attending school,” said a Tedim resident.

Although Thantlang is a city controlled by the Military Council, it is reported that basic education schools have not been opened since the military took power because there are no residents. Similarly, basic education schools have not been opened this year in the townships of Tonzang, Falam, Matupi, Mindat, Kanpetlet, and Paletwa, which are controlled by the revolutionary forces.
