116 military family members of prisoners of war (POWs) captured by the Arakan Army (AA) during the fighting in Rakhine State, as well as 26 civilians and detainees who were detained for various reasons, have been released in recent days, AA sources said on February 10. The family members of POWs who were released are from areas not under the control of the Military council and were released with a ceremony, the AA said.
“Currently, 116 military families of POWs and 26 civilian prisoners are being released initially. Those who can be released after further investigation will be released. Some have been punished for crimes,” the AA said. He did not want to reveal which township the release was from due to concerns about the airstrikes by the Military council. AA sources said that more than 100 Prison of war (POWs) and military family members have been killed and more than 120 injured in airstrikes by the Military council in Rakhine State.
The Military council is also conducting airstrikes on the location of prisoners of war held by the AA. On January 18, the Military council bombed a location where families of prisoners of war were being held near Ramchaung, Myauk-U Township, killing 28 children and women and injuring 25 others.
