The Arakan Army (AA) announced that about 700 people, including Colonel Than Soe Win, commander of the 11th Division of the Military Council, may have been killed in the battle for the capture of Gwe town, the last time the AA captured it in 2024. The battle for the capture of Gwe town began on December 15, 2024, when the AA launched an offensive against the two battalions based in Gwe town, the 562nd and 563rd Battalions, and on December 29, 2024, at 12 noon, both the battalions based in Gwe were captured in one day.

“Some battalion commanders, including the commander of the 11th Division, Colonel Than Soe Win, were killed, and many other ranks were killed. Many armored vehicles, military equipment, and ammunition were captured in the battle. According to the bodies on the ground, the testimonies of the captured prisoners, and the documents seized, it is estimated that at least 700 enemy soldiers were killed during the battle from the beginning to the end of the offensive in Gwe,” the AA statement said.

During the battle for Gwe, in addition to the Gwe-based battalions of the Military Council, the 66th Division, the 4th Infantry Division, the 214th Infantry Division, the 215th Infantry Division, and the 217th Infantry Division under the 11th Division, the 36th Infantry Division, the 38th Infantry Division, The 93rd Battalion, 271st Battalion, and 308th Infantry Regiment were attacked one after another without stopping.
