On September 25th, the Military Council court sentenced four people who protested against the Military Council in Kalaymyo, Sagaing Region to 10 years in prison. On April 16, 2023, the Military Council arrested Ko Than Soe Oo, Lia Cing Don Kim, Ma Hin San and Ko Myo Ko Win, who were involved in the revolutionary Thingyan strike in Kalalaymyo. After that, he was sentenced to two years in prison in May under Section 505 (a) of the Penal Code.
Now Section 50 (j) of the Anti-Terrorism Law, Sections 50(h) and 52(a) and an additional 10 years in prison each will serve a total of 12 years in prison. U Vaipu, a member of the Kalaymyo main strike, said that this was an unfair trial. “The child strike group is being held against the group and then unjustly imprisoned. That’s why so many prison terms were imposed because they didn’t dare to oppose them.”
While the Military Council is targeting and arresting strike forces that oppose him, strike members say that the main strike force is carrying out anti-dictatorship activities almost every day. Currently, the protest group is leading the mass movement to keep Ambassador U Kyaw Moe Tun at the United Nations from September 21st to September 26th.
Since the military coup, there have been 30 people shot dead and 60 people arrested for opposing the military regime in Kalaymyo. According to a September 25 statement by the Association for the Assistance of Political Prisoners (AAPP), there are 19,264 people across the country after the coup, of which 7,368 have been sentenced to prison.
