Hundreds of Kuki-Zo Women peacefully protested in Moreh town on January 3, 2025 in Tinnoupal district of Manipur state. The peaceful protest led by Kuki innpi tingnoupal was against the violence that broke out in Saibol area on December 31, 2024 when the Central Region Police Force (CRPF) and Border Security Force (BSF) troops attacked a Kuki-Zo women’s protest in the area, in which 64 women were injured and one of them had an eye gouged out, officials said.
“That’s why government offices, shops, and pedestrians in Moreh town have been closed,” said a local. Starting on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2024, the Kathe militants disrupted the Kuki-Zo’s Christmas celebrations, leading to clashes between the two sides. On December 31, Indian Central Region Police Force (CRPF) and BSF troops went to the Kuki-Zo volunteers’ camp No. 1 to disperse them, which led to clashes with Kuki-Zo women, according to local media.
The women’s group protested because they did not trust the Indian central forces that were preparing to deploy them, and the central government forces did not peacefully resolve their demand to withdraw, but violently suppressed them. It is reported that 64 women were injured, some seriously, by firing tear gas and rubber bullets.
Regarding this incident, the Kuki-Zo Council will continue to protest if the Indian central forces do not leave the Saibol area. Since the area is on the border of Kuki-Zo and Kate territory, only our volunteers are providing security. Therefore, we will continue to demand that the Indian central government resolve this issue as soon as possible, an official said.
