On the 77th anniversary of Independence Day today (January 4), the Military council that took power announced that it would release nearly 6,000 prisoners. The exact number is 5,864 prisoners. It is not known whether those who will be released include political prisoners who were unjustly arrested for opposing the military coup.

In the past, many prisoners were imprisoned for criminal offenses, but only a handful of those who were unjustly arrested under political offenses were released. There are at least 46 prisons across the country, and from February 1, 2021 to January 3, 2025, after the military took power, a total of 28,096 people, including State Counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, were unjustly arrested, of whom 2,1499 are still being held, the Political Prisoners’ Assistance and Welfare Association (PPNM) said on January 3, 2024.
