As reported by TSAMTO on December 28, 2024, Russia has completed the delivery of six Su-30SME multirole fighter aircraft to the Myanmar Air Force under a 2018 contract valued at $400 million. The delivery, financed through a Russian loan, concluded with the official commissioning of the final two aircraft on December 15, 2024. The ceremony, held at Meiktila Air Base in Mandalay, marked the 77th anniversary of the Myanmar Air Force and was attended by Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.

The six Russian-made Su-30 SME fighter jets ordered by Myanmar have been delivered to the country, the Army Recognition Group, a global arms news source, reported on January 6, 2025. The last two of the six Su-30 SME fighters ordered by Myanmar were delivered on December 15, 2024. The first two fighters were delivered on December 15, 2023.

The six SU-30 fighter jets are worth about $400 million and the purchase of six was agreed during the Russian Defense Minister’s visit to Myanmar in 2018. The Myanmar Witness, a monitoring group that monitors Myanmar, says the Su-30 has twice the range and lethality of the Yak-130 normally used by the Myanmar military council.

In 2024, the military council carried out heavy airstrikes during clashes with ethnic armed groups, and also carried out numerous airstrikes on civilian areas in areas where there was no fighting. In 2024, 1,769 civilians were killed and 3,720 injured nationwide due to the military council’s air and artillery fire.
