One person was killed and two others were injured when two vehicles carrying illegal Burmese workers collided on the Three Pagoda-Sangkhlaburi road near Nauklu village in Sangkhlaburi township, Thailand, on the night of January 7, the Bangkok Post reported yesterday. The two pickup trucks were carrying 30 Burmese migrants who had illegally crossed the border into Thailand, a Thai police officer said. A woman died and two men were injured in the collision.
The two injured men were taken to hospital by the Thai Social Welfare Department, while the two drivers and others fled, the report said. U Moe Daw, chairman of the Thailand-based Joint Action Committee for Burmese Citizens (JACBA), urged Myanmar nationals who are trying to illegally enter Thailand through brokers to be wary of such incidents.
“They are not allowed to walk the tightrope because they do not have enough life insurance, “I don’t want to live a life of misery because of the services of brokers. If possible, let’s say we should do it through legal means, and the legal route is the MOU system. When we can’t tolerate that, we choose the illegal route which is faster, and this unfortunate incident happens,” said Moe.
In the past 2024, 31 Burmese people died and 81 were injured in traffic accidents while illegally crossing the border into Thailand, according to data collected by the JACBA group.
