U.S. House of Representatives hearing on human rights abuses and religious freedom violations, including against Christian minorities in Myanmar, which has been ruled by a military coup, was held on February 3 at the U.S. House of Representatives Building in Washington, D.C.
National Unity Government (NUG) Acting President Duwa Shila, Republican Senator Todd Young, and Democratic Senator Chris Van Hollen delivered remarks online. Victims of human rights and religious freedom violations in Myanmar shared their stories online.
Stephen Schneck, Chair of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, also delivered a speech in person, as did National Unity Government Foreign Minister Daw Zin Mar Aung, NUG Spokesperson U Kyaw Zaw, and NUG Minister for International Cooperation Dr. Sa Sa.
The hearing was attended by Myanmar ethnic Christian religious leaders, Buddhist monks and some Islamic religious leaders, as well as officials from Amnesty International USA and other human rights activists, were present. Attendees called on the new US administration to take serious action against religious freedom violations in Myanmar and to formally recognize the killings of the Burmese military’s Christian minority as war crimes and crimes against humanity.
