The leader of the military coup Min Aung Hlaing, called a meeting in National Defence and Security Committee (NDSC) this morning on July 31 and announced that the state of emergency has been extended for another 6 months. 421(b) of the 2008 constitution, as the emergency period that was extended on February 1 of this year has ended today. According to 425, the emergency period was extended by 6 months. This extension is the fourth extension after a year of military coup.
At today’s National Defense and Security Committee (NDSC) meeting, Acting President U Myint Shwe said that the country’s situation must be considered an abnormal situation, so the military council is being extended again. Political commentators said that the military council’s extension violated the 2008 constitution which they are using.
U Henry Van Thio, who served as vice president during the NLD government, also attended today’s Kalon / NDSC meeting and supported the extension of the military council. According to the 2008 constitution, the extension of the emergency period can be extended twice by six months if the Chief of Defense is unable to complete his duties.
