Syrian rebels seized control of the capital Damascus on Sunday, bringing the government to an end. People took to the streets to celebrate the end of 50 years of family rule by President Bashar Assad.

The president has been removed from office and all those held captive have been released, a group said on state media. The opposition group, which calls itself the Operation Reconciliation of Damascus, called on rebels and the public to preserve the institutions of a free Syria in a statement.

The head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Assad had left the country as rebels began to advance on the capital, hours after the announcement. Tens of thousands of people have been killed, The capital was stunned by the sudden victory of rebels in a nearly 14-year civil war that has displaced half of the country’s 23 million people and forced the president to flee.
