Locals said that the Military Council troops raided Thazi village in Kalay township, Sagaing Region, and burned down nearly 100 houses in the village. The platoon of more than 100 troops has been stationed in Thazi village since August 16. From that time until today, August 20, a local woman said that the soldiers of the Military council have been going from house to house searching and burning.

“I don’t see a picture of every house being burnt down. I can see a pattern of four spots. You have to look at the pattern of the smoke coming out. The locals have been running since they heard the news of the column’s arrival.” As the military council troops are still in Thazi village, nearly 3,000 villagers have to flee to safe places. Residents said that they still do not know the details of the damage in the village as they have not been able to return home.

RFA reached out to Sagaing Regional Resources Minister U Tin Than Win by phone regarding this situation, but he did not receive a reply. According to a report on August 8 by Data for Myanmar, a group that monitors arson incidents, 57,503 homes in Sagaing Region were destroyed by fire during the coup. According to data from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), there are more than 750,000 people who have fled their homes in Sagaing Region after the military coup.
