Officials in the United States and Europe said that the United States has approved the delivery of F-16 fighter jets from the Netherlands and Denmark to Ukraine. It is not clear when the first batch of F-16 fighter jets will arrive in Ukraine, but it will take at least 6 months to train Ukrainian pilots.
The UK has long been asking the West to provide modern jet fighters to gain an advantage in the war. Ukraine has recently launched a counter-offensive against Russia without air support, and has been subjected to airstrikes and artillery fire by Russian forces.
The Soviet-era military weapons used by Ukrainian forces are impervious to air-to-air missiles from Russian jets. “Modern warfare cannot be won without air power,” said Captain Yevgen Rakita, spokesman for the 18th Airborne Division.
The United States says it will send F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine as soon as possible after training Ukrainian pilots. U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken sent a letter to the foreign ministers of the Netherlands and Denmark this week formally pledging to approve all requests from third countries to transfer F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine.
Training of Ukrainian fighter pilots has already started this month, Danish Defense Minister Jakob Eli Manjensen said. 11 Western European countries such as the Netherlands, Belgium Canada Denmark Luxembourg Norway Poland Portugal Romania Sweden and Britain pledged in July to train Ukrainian pilots to fly F-16 fighter jets. Officials said earlier that Ukrainian pilots would need 6 to 8 months of training to fly the F-16 fighter jets.
