The search for the helicopter carrying the Iranian president and other high-ranking officials was continuing into the northwest of the country Sunday night, Iranian officials said. The fate of President Ebrahim Raisi is still uncertain.

Iran’s state media said the helicopter crashed in Iran’s East Azerbaijan province early Sunday due to bad weather. President Raisi on the helicopter Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and 2 other officials were also said to have accompanied him.

The helicopter crashed near the border of the two countries after meeting with the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, to inaugurate the dam project on the border of the two countries. Iran’s state news agency announced Saturday that President Raisi will go to the border to inaugurate the dam.

Azerbaijani President Aliyev wrote on the X social network that he was deeply troubled by the news of the helicopter crash. He is praying for the brotherly partner country and offers to provide the necessary assistance. The Iranian news also reported that the search and rescue team had to go on foot because the view was not clear due to fog in the area where the helicopter crashed.
