Imprisoned President U Win Myint’s health is in danger

Sources close to Taung Ngu Prison, where he was detained, said that imprisoned President U Win Myint is in poor health and had to be fitted with a urinary catheter. The nature of the disease he was suffering from is unclear, but catheterization is typically used to treat other serious conditions, including cystitis or stroke, which occur in the elderly.

The 71-year-old U Win Myint was sentenced to 12 years in prison by the Military Council and has been detained in Taung Ngu, Baguio since January. The health of other elderly NLD members, including party patron U Win Htin and vice president Dr. Zaw Myint Maung, is also a concern. 81-year-old U Win Thyn had to be fitted with an oxygen machine at night, and 71-year-old Dr. Zaw Myint Maung was suffering from leukemia.

U Win Thing, who used a walker or a wheelchair to get around before being imprisoned, was imprisoned for 20 years and detained in Obo Prison in Mandalay. His advanced age and dirty conditions in prison and high blood pressure; The combination of health problems such as diabetes and dyspnea put him at great risk.

Mandalay Region Chief Minister Dr. Zaw Myint Maung was sentenced to 25 years in prison and is being treated for leukemia. He still receives medication from his family, but the military council restricts his movements within the prison and the delivery of food and supplies to him. Last month, his home in Amarapura, Mandalay was targeted and bombed.

At the same time, NLD government electricity minister U Win Khaing, who was sentenced to 28 years in prison, suffered a heart attack in Obo prison on June 1. Although he successfully overcame the heart attack, he is still being treated for heart problems at Mandalay General Hospital.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who turned 78 on Monday, does not appear to have serious health problems. But he also needs some medication for age-related health conditions. Although the military council says his health is good, Myanmar citizens are deeply concerned about the civilian leader who has been sentenced to 33 years in Nay Pyi Taw prison. Hardly anyone believes in the health care that the Military Council gave to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

In 2021, 79-year-old NLD veteran leader U Nyan Win was transferred from Insein Prison to Yangon General Hospital for treatment due to Covid-19, but he died because he did not receive proper treatment in time. There are other cases where imprisoned NLD government ministers face serious health conditions and require treatment outside prison.

A group of the NLD, which records human rights violations, said that the coup military council had killed 3,818 people as of May 31. Among those killed were 93 members of the NLD, including 2 MPs. About 1,200 members of the NLD, including 77 members of parliament, were also arrested, the group said.

About President U Win Myint

Win Myint (born 8 November 1951) is a Burmese politician who served as the 10th president of Myanmar from 2018 to 2021. He was the Speaker of the House of Representatives from 2016 to 2018. He also served as a member of parliament in the House of Representatives (Pyithu Hluttaw) from 2012 to 2018. He was appointed as NLD’s committee secretary for Ayeyawady Region and later became secretary of the NLD’s Central Executive Committee. 

He studied primary education at Nyaung Chaung Basic Education Primary School and secondary education at Danubyu Basic Education High School, graduated with a B.Sc (Geology) degree from Yangon Arts and Science University. He is married to Cho Cho and the couple has one daughter, Phyu Phyu Thin. He also won Higher Grade Pleader and High Court Advocate degrees. He worked as a High Court senior lawyer and High Court advocate in Danubyu and Pathein, Ayeyawady Region.

He is a NLD member since the formation of the party in 1988, and had three electoral victories on the party ticket—being elected for the seats in his hometown Irrawaddy Delta’s Danubyu in the 1990 election, Irrawaddy’s Pathein Township in the 2012 by-election and Yangon’s Tamwe township in the 2015 election. Like many other political activists and politicians, he was arrested several times by the military regime.

In 2020 election, NLD had secured 396 seats of 498 contested seats in parliament. On 1 February 2021, military had staged a coup and he was detained by military along with fellow parliament members including the Democratic party leader, Aung Sun Suu Kyi in Naypyidaw city. After the coup, elected members of parliament with the mandate of people had formed CRPH (Committee Representing Pyidaungsuh Hluttaw [Union Parliament] ). Later, they managed to discuss with ethnic groups, ethnic armed organizations, NGOs and stakeholders to work together for Federal Union and had founded Interim National Unity Government (NUG) aiming to topple military dictatorship and restore democracy back in Myanmar. He remains in his role as President in the newly formed National Unity Government of Myanmar.
