Manipura Conflict, the Central Government Pressured to Discuss between Ethnic groups
In India’s Manipur state, which borders Myanmar and India, seven top government officials are pressuring the Manipur authorities to hold talks between the ethnic groups in order to ease ethnic violence between the majority Manipur people and the Christian Kuki- Zomi tribe. The call came after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting in Manipur.
At least 115 people have been killed and 300 injured in the last two months of violence in the state of Manipur, where the ruling BJP party won. Prime Minister Modi has been criticized for not having a public discussion about the crisis facing the ethnic groups. He convened a high-level cabinet meeting on Tuesday (June 25) within hours of his return from the US and Egypt.
The junior ministers explained to Prime Minister Modi that they are working to restore normalcy in Manipur state. After the cabinet meeting, they told the Manipur state government authorities to discuss with all stakeholders between the local majority Meitei (Katee) and Kuki communities who are at odds.
Since last May 3, thousands of people have fled their homes due to terrorist attacks and arson in Manipur state. The ethnic groups protested against the state government’s designation of the mountainous area where they live as a forest area, confiscation of their ancestral lands and the identification of the Manipur people as an ethnic group, resulting in mutual violent attacks.
After these protests, churches and homes of some Kuki ethnic groups were burned down in Imphar, where most of the Meitei (Katee) people live. After the pelting with stones, riots broke out in cities such as More and Churachandpur, and local residents said that houses of the Meitei (Katee) people were set on fire.
